Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003 - 11:14 p.m. Somebody has been cast as the new Prince Dauntless in a production of "Once Upon A Mattress." (pssst! That person is me!!!) The audition kicked major ass. I was able to throw together a pretty good rendition of "As Time Goes By" for the vocal part of my try-out. When asked how I knew that song, I proudly proclaimed that it's the theme song of one of my favorite PBS britcoms of the same name. :-) After my prepared piece, the musical director kept me on stage for a few minutes of impromptu singing. She'd play a familiar melody, and I'd sing my heart out. Nobody else who auditioned had a chance to do that. I won the group over. I was kind of quiet for the hour or so I sat amongst the crowd beforehand, as I usually am when thrown into a new situation with no familiar faces. So, when I confidently strode onto the stage (I'm really good at giving the impression of confidence sometimes) and filled the auditorium with my voice accompanied by piano, I think I made a good impression. I was even invited to join a few of them at Applebee's afterward for a round of drinks, which I graciously accepted. It feels great to have somewhere to channel my creative energies again. Starting at the end of the month, for three days a week I will be able to forget my personal stress and drama and concentrate on a much more fun form of drama. So, my first "real" audition and I land the lead male role. That ain't too shabby, if I do say so myself. A prince! I'm going to be a prince! Kick ass.
